7 - Styrrup | County Golf League

Quite a few signed up for

Quite a few signed up for this event so far.

It is an hilly course and it would be real fun to have a live webcam watching players ~~walk~~ climb up to 16th and 17th greens, always fun. Your always ready for a pint after a round at Stocksbridge.

As for scenery, if the skies are clear the panorama is simply stunning!

Watch out for the cows beside the 15th tee Mr Beech!

So far 29 players Confirmed/Interested and great to see Mr Rich Shaw sign up, hope you can make it Rich long time no see, you should be ok up at Stocksbridge theres not many trees for you to drop!

Stocksbridge are going through some drainage work and changes but i am talking to them about this and getting updates each week. Roger Broad is the pro there and he's a good guy and keeping me updated.

I hope you all like Stocksbridge, it's really something different and what i noticed the first time i went there was how friendly the members and staff are.

Thanks John, the pressure is on now. Not only do I have to make sure I turn up, but I also have to avoid what few trees there are. I am pretty sure I can manage the first, but we will have to see about the second.

I am looking forward to seeing you all again, and hopefully this will be the first step on a comeback. My goal is to try to hit at least 1 fairway, which will mean I will be starting back from where I finished off

I've been talking to a member

I've been talking to a member at Stocksbridge, who's also a past club captain, and the drainage work is apparently all down the sides of fairways rather than across them. This is to try and alleviate the inevitable problem of water draining from the higher ground, of which there's plenty, towards the greens at clubhouse level and to attempt to drain the 1st, 2nd and 9th greens as well.

The bad news is that the greens are in very poor condition due to the recent rain, snow and cold weather preventing any real maintenance work. The course has been closed more than open recently. The worse thing is that the course is still, as of this morning, covered in snow so unless there is an improvement in the weather ????

Honestly this Winter League

Honestly this Winter League is just jinxed, the weathers currently crap, its been crap and looks like staying crap....

Last week i talked to Roger Broad the Pro at Stocksbridge and he said he would keep me informed of the course condition and he said the drainage work would not affect the game. Yesterday afternoon i talked with Rogers assistant and he advised me:

The course is currently under snow and they are waiting for the temperature to drop to see what its like underneath
When/If the temperature drops then they will see the condition of the greens underneath (whether they are wet through, worn, bumpy etc)

I will be calling them or them calling me after dinner today when they expect a green keepers report, that is if the temperature drops.

Contingency

At Ramsdale when the game could not happen it was suitable to re-arrange the date but attendance dropped to 16 players. With 26/27 players currently indicating they can play on Sunday 24th March i am going to attempt to find another course dependent on the feedback i get about Stocksbridge.

Stocksbridge said they would help me out with this. I have paid Stocksbridge £100 deposit and i really don't want us to miss having an event here so if this game does not happen i will schedule Stocksbridge for the first game in Winter League 2013-2014 in early September.

By doing this i will say keep the £100 deposit but find us a course for Sunday 24th March. This will hopefully mean they will find us a good course as they won't want to lose out on the £650+ we will be sending their way in September!

I will send the above out in a email to all players registered so everyone is in the loop.

I booked a round on TeeTimes

I booked a round on TeeTimes for this Saturday hoping to get some practice as I havent been there before (really to check where them trees are John).

Having read Malcs post I have just rung now and he says best hope for this Sat is 15 holes, all on temp greens. He has cancelled my round and advised I dont book again until mid April.

Doesnt look too promising for the 24th

PS. Cheers Malc, had it not been for you I think I would have had a wasted journey or a very disappointing round.

Update: The pro at Stocksbridge is sourcing a course for us on Sunday 24th March and trying to get us a decent price.

Consider Stocksbridge as cancelled but hopefully we will have a game somewhere!

Sunday is confirmed at Styrupp Hall Golf & Country Club I have booked for 24 players but this can be modified and I have promised the club I will finilase numbers on Wednesday so your cooperation regarding confirmed numbers would be appreciated. 1st teetime is 12.02pm. Cannot get anything earlier due to the late booking and and other diary commitments.

Cost is to be confirmed but should be similar to Stocksbridge. I will post the cost on Monday

We've played the Captain's Drive In today and given the recent weather the course has played well. Obviously it's been wet but yet again all the tees were open and all greens were on. it is the 1st time that the competiton tees were used but all normal tees are open as well.

So having never played this course, it is likely to be a 4 & hour round? and if so, could I request going out in an early group.

Played today with the BOGS

Played today with the BOGS (British Oak Golf Society). Its not that serious just 20 mates from the local and its a 4 ball Texas Scramble.

We played at Bradley Park in Huddersfield and I did not hit any trees, I have witnesses if you need me to provide evidence, and before you ask that is not because I didnt hit it far enough. In fact I was in the winning team. So now I have the taste of victory I am all hyped up and ready for you next week.

29 Players now 8 tee times, looks like we might have to get a march on but with three three balls going out first this should be ok.

We will be using the 2nd as a Call Up Hole.....If you are not on the green on Hole 2 when the group behind stand on the Tee Box on Hole 2 then please ask them to play their Tee shots. If you are already putting when the group behind stand on the Tee Box then carry on.

The event on Sunday 24th March as been cancelled due to snow. With the country covered in snow no point searching for a half decent course so i have re-scheduled the event for Sunday 31st March with the same tee times.

We lost Andy, Robin, Kev, Darren, Tim, Mario and another couple were really doubtful for Easter Sunday so i felt bad about it so re-arranged to Sunday 7th in the hope more could play in decent weather with the course in good condition (weather permitting) and now we have lost Malc, Peter, Trev and Robin so far on Sunday 7th!

Honestly this Winter League as been jinxed from day one!

Well we finally got Event 7

Well we finally got Event 7 played at Styrrup today. I'd like to say thanks to everyone for coming today it was a cracking day, some good scoring, course was good, US Masters Sweepstake, Teams drawn for Jolly Boys Outing, David Shepherd played his first game with us and Rich Shaw returned (The final tree count was 6).

VPAR was good, pity it scored the 9th Hole as a Par 5 and Paul Sherwin could not get a signal but it's still in early stages and it adds to the fun of the day.

A big well done to the top three, Dan Gordon 39 points, Jim 38 points and Mario 38 points (CB).

Thanks again fellas see you at Rudding Park, i am now waiting to see who i have drawn on the Masters sweepstake....
